Defending Lützerath for climate justice

January 30, 2023

The german government has approved the extraction of 280 million tons of brown coal from the coal pit, next to Lützerath in Germany. This dirty deal was made with one of the biggest fossil coorporations, RWE, that keeps on making profits by killing our planet. In order to have a chance to keep the 1.5 degree limit of the Paris Agreement, the coal under Lützerath must not be extracted anymore. This is because the remaining german budget is currently only 20 million tons of coal!

Different groups like Fridays For Future Germany, Extinction Rebellion and the support of an internationalist network of MAPA climate justice activists occupied the village, resisting the destruction to stop the coal digger! In the beginning of this year they started facing a brutal eviction of this occupation.

Eventhough great political pressure was being built by a famous german band AnnenMayKantereit, performing for 7000 people in front of the, followed by a big demonstration with 35.000 people attending a few days later, it was not enough to stop this climate destroying desaster!

I captured the moments before und during the big eviction “day x”.

“I really think this moment is historical climate wise!
THIS COAL HAS GLOBAL IMPLICATIONS!”

The protestors build up barricades with their hands and tools to slow down the eviction process.

For me this picture captured one of the most important political moments. It shows Lakshmi and Sulti (left) trying to talk to Luisa Neubauer (right) about the whiteness of the movement and ways of reflecting the role of the most famous climate spokesperson in Germany. The conversation ended quickly in a frustrating manner.
